TYPE OF CAMP: Overnight/Sleepaway.

CAMPER GENDER(S): Coed Campers.

BRIEF CAMP DESCRIPTION: Talisman Programs provide exceptional summer camp opportunities for young people ages 6-22 with Autism Spectrum Disorders, ADHD and other learning differences. Since 1980 our ACA-accredited programs have been offering unique alternatives to ordinary summer camps. We provide a structured, nurturing environment within an exciting adventure program in which our campers can have a successful summer while increasing social skills, a sense of personal responsibility and a more positive self-image.

SPECIAL NEEDS CAMPERS: All of our programs are specifically designed for young people with ADHD, Asperger's Syndrome, high-functioning autism, and similar learning differences. We combine a traditional camp environment with structured programming and a highly-trained staff to help campers increase responsibility, problem-solving, and social skills while having a great time.

CAMP INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES OFFERED:
Fine Arts/Crafts, Swimming, Waterfront/Aquatics, Science, Adventure, Travel, Wilderness/Nature, and more. Backpacking, Canoeing, Caving, Tree-climbing, Rock-climbing, Arts & Crafts, Science Exploration, & Archery.

CAMP LOCATION: Talisman is located in the small town of Zirconia, in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, just south of Hendersonville. We're surrounded by woodlands, close to the Pisgah National Forest, and easy to reach from Atlanta, Charlotte, and Greenville, SC.

CAMP FACILITIES: Our 60-acre campus includes 4 bunkhouses, a comfortable dining hall, outdoor pool, gym, campfire circle, athletic fields, infirmary, and a canoe pond.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Talisman offers a variety of camp programs for kids with ADHD or on the autism spectrum, divided by age. Younger campers join one of our campus-based programs and join in traditional camp activities, from rock-climbing and hiking, to swimming, archery, and arts and crafts. Older campers choose from a number of expedition-based programs, including backpacking, canoeing, climbing and caving.

All staff receive over 2 weeks of training in both hard skills (First Aid, Lifeguarding, camping skills, bus driving) and soft skills (building relationships, problem-solving, understanding of our population, etc.). All staff receive a background check and drug screen, and go through a thorough interview and reference check process.

Talisman Programs has been ACA-accredited since 1988. We operate in the National Forests under permit. Staff leading more involved activities (e.g., rock climbing) hold certifications in facilitation and safety in those areas.

Talisman has been providing programs for special needs populations since 1980, refining our focus over the years to ADHD and autism. We believe every child wants to do well, and that each child has unique strengths, struggles, and outlooks on life. We use a variety of tools and approaches to meet each child where he or she is and help them meet their objectives in socially appropriate and fulfilling ways.

CAMP LEADERSHIP CIT/LIT PROGRAMS: Teens ages 15-17 and young adults 18-22 can take our Leadership course to develop more advanced skills. Successful completion can lead to acceptance to our Krewe program, an on-campus job-skill-building session. This is an invitation-only program for returning campers who qualify.

CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS OR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: This year we are inaugurating the Talisman Scholarship fund, through the American Camp Association. We are seeking donors to build the fund. For more information on both donating and applying for a partial scholarship, please contact our office.

OTHER CAMP INFO: Talisman offers a special travel session each year. This year we are expanding our Caves and Climbing session, exploring caves and rocks of the southeast and into Kentucky.

We also offer programs for young adults 18-22 who are looking to improve their independent living and social skills. The session combines the best of campus activities with an introduction to aspects of adult life and the social world.

And new this year: a 6-day session just for 6-7-year-olds! Great introduction to the camp experience.

Its goal is to enable all students to experience the joy of dance and performance while attaining professional technique and style. Since its inception, City Ballet has been dedicated to training students in the Cecchetti Syllabus of classical ballet and remains the singular facility offering this method in the Triangle.

Classes are offered in ballet, pointe, modern, jazz, tap, and hip-hop. Additionally, numerous workshops are presented to expose students to different dance genres beyond the classical curriculum. City Ballet offers students the opportunity to perform in two full-length productions each year - The Nutcracker by audition and a spring recital.

The school also participates in festivals and workshops. Some of the most recent stage appearances include those at The American Heart Association’s Triangle Heart Ball, Festival of North Carolina Dance, AT&T’s Winterfest and Lafayette Village's Tree Lighting.

Preschool Dance is the beginning of a lifetime of dance appreciation. It is the essence of using imagination and exploration as building blocks for a dance foundation. Students focus on gross motor skills (skipping, hopping and jumping) through musicality and movement. City Ballet pays special attention to the needs and abilities of preschoolers by using theme-based lesson plans full of meaningful play. For more information, please visit This Website Link.

He was also critically acclaimed and nominated for his work on Broadway as Rum Tum Tugger in Cats, Javert in Les Miserables, and Chauvelin in The Scarlett Pimpernel. Other Broadway credits include: Lennon, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Getting Away With Murder, A Christmas Carol, Rags, Barnum, Jerome Robbins' Broadway, Jekyll and Hyde and the current Tony-winning revival of Pippin.

Mann's career has expanded into film including the cult favorites, A Chorus Line and Critters. He continues to thrive on television series like 30 Rock, SMASH, As the World Turns, The Dresden Files, and the highly-anticipated Wachowski Netflix project, Sense8.

Mann is the Carolyn Plemmons Phillips/Ben R. Phillips Distinguished Professor in Musical Theatre at Western Carolina University. He served as artistic director of The Lost Colony (North Carolina's long-running outdoor drama) and was the founding artistic director of the Carolina Arts Festival of the North Carolina Theatre for a decade.

Actor, singer, and dancer Charlotte d'Amboise most recently returned to the Broadway stage as Fastrada in the recent Tony-winning revival of Pippin. Previously, she could be seen as Roxie Hart in the Broadway smash Chicago after recently starring as Cassie in the critically acclaimed Broadway revival of A Chorus Line. Born in New York, Ms d'Amboise made her Broadway debut in Cats in 1983.

Ms. d'Amboises extensive Broadway credits include her Tony nominated performance in Jerome Robbins Broadway, Lola in Damn Yankees, the wife in Susan Stromans critically acclaimed Contact, and Kathy in the Roundabouts revival of Company. The original Broadway productions of Carrie, Sing and Dance, and Claudine in the City Centers encore presentation of Can-Can among her other Broadway credits.

In the spring of 2005, Ms. d'Amboise replaced an injured Christina Applegate in the pre-Broadway and Broadway revival of Sweet Charity. Once Applegate returned, d'Amboise remained as her standby while simultaneously performing the role of Roxie Hart in Chicago.

She has received the Astaire award for achievement in dance for her performance in Damn Yankees, Sweet Charity, and Chicago, the Bay Area Theatre Circle Award for Chicago, the L.A. Ovation award for leading actress in a musical for Chicago, the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circles Award for leading performance in Chicago, and the Astaire award for Chicago and Sweet Charity.

D'Amboise's film credits include The In Crowd; American Blue Note; Just Off The Coast; and The Preachers Wife. On television she has appeared in the Kennedy Center Honors, Law and Order, a videotaped performance of the Broadway musical Contact, and made-for-TV movies.

CAMP LOCATION: We are located on 260 acres of land in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina.

CAMP FACILITIES: We have lodging for up to 180 people, a full-service cafeteria, swimming pool, lake for boating, fishing pond, hiking trails, full-size gym, game room, and multiple indoor and outdoor meeting spaces.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Our Summer Camp programs are designed as one-week residential camps for boys and girls ages 7-15. We offer six different weeks of camp, but it’s the same program, and all ages can come each week. The campers come to camp on Sunday afternoon and stay until Friday evening. They are assigned to a cabin group based on their age. Each cabin group will have 6-8 campers and one summer staff member called a Cabin Director. The Cabin Director stays in the cabin with the campers and provides leadership and supervision for that cabin group throughout the week.

Activities offered at our camp include hiking, swimming, boating, sports, crafts, games, teambuilding activities, rock climbing wall, and more. Additionally, older campers will have the opportunity to do our high ropes course, and younger campers will have a chance to visit a petting farm neighboring the camp.

Safety of our campers is top priority. We have trained lifeguards on duty for all waterfront activities, and all campers are required to wear life jackets while boating. During swim times, campers must remain in the shallow end of the pool unless they can demonstrate swimming proficiency by passing a swim test administered by the lifeguards.

Our Cabin Directors are hired through a diligent screening process. All Cabin Directors must complete a thorough job application and interview. We check several references and run a national criminal background history check on each applicant. Once hired, they undergo extensive, week-long training including certification in First Aid and CPR before they are put in charge of a group of campers.

It is our aim at South Mountain Christian Camp to nurture the faith of each of our campers. We do this through nightly chapel services which use creative teaching methods like skits, object lessons, and activities to teach campers what it means to have a relationship with Jesus Christ. Additionally, each cabin group will have a short Bible devotional time each morning while they are at camp.

At the end of the week, we have a baptism service for any camper who has accepted Christ as Lord and Savior of their lives and wishes to participate in the baptism service here. We never try to talk a camper into being baptized, and we make every effort to check with parents before allowing a camper to do so. However, when we are unable to reach parents by phone, we allow campers to use their best discretion when considering how their parents would feel about them being baptized at camp. For this reason, parents are encouraged to discuss this topic with campers prior to their week of camp so that they can understand and respect the parents' wishes.

CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS OR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: Financial Assistance program available for any in need.

SUMMER CAMP JOBS:

The Cabin Director’s job is to provide leadership and supervision for their cabin group (6-8 campers) and to lead them in games and activities. The Cabin Director position is a ministry opportunity. Cabin Directors build relationships with their campers and provide spiritual guidance for them. They lead cabin devotionals each morning and are available after chapel each night to pray with campers. All Cabin Directors will have 1 ½ days off each week (Friday evening to Sunday afternoon). During time off, they are free to leave Camp or stay on the grounds if they so choose.

This year, employment will begin on June 19th. The last day of work will be August 9th. If you would like more details about employment or our summer program, please visit our website at This Website Link.

CAMP LOCATION: YMCA Camp Harrison at Herring Ridge is located on a spectacular tract of land in the Brushy Mountains of North Carolina located between Lenoir and North Wilkesboro just 90 minutes from Charlotte, N.C. There are more than 2,000 acres of woods, streams, and trails centered around private, 140-acre Lake Broyhill.

CAMP FACILITIES: Our 12 log cabins sleep people bunk style. All have air conditioning, heat, showers, restrooms, ceiling fans and water fountains for your comfort.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Camp Harrison's stunning wooded campus provides all the wide open space and clean mountain air kids need to clear their minds and relax their bodies. Over half their waking hours are spent outdoors, enjoying land activities in the mornings and lakefront and water activities in the afternoons. Outside activities exert the body and the mind so campers go to bed tired and happy - but not before a few giggles break out next to the glow of campfire!

YMCA Camp Harrison provides a variety of adrenaline-pumping activities like the ropes course, mountain boarding and archery. Sometimes these activities require multiple tries to master, prompting campers to face fears head-on. The satisfied grins, exuberant fist pumps and cheers of teammates at the finish line encourage kids to try their luck at something else, face new situations with confidence, and configure solutions based on past experiences. Kids discover their competence and character when faced with adversity, and there are few feelings more satisfying than getting better at something. If you can get "big air" on the zip line, then maybe introducing yourself to a new person isn't so scary!

CAMP LEADERSHIP CIT/LIT PROGRAMS: For rising sophomores, the LIT experience is designed to teach leadership skills including communication, decision-making, and conflict resolution. These skills are taught through many activities from discussions and team building challenges, to speakers and hands-on leadership opportunities; all the while emphasizing the YMCA's core values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and faith.

Our CIT program is geared towards learning the leadership and supervisory skills it takes to be a future part of the Camp Harrison Counselor Staff. Through interaction in our cabins, leading devotions, team building projects, and teaching activities, these rising juniors get hands on experience on what it means to be a leader at Camp.

CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS OR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: Financial Assistance is offered to those who qualify and can subsidize 20-80% of the cost of camp for someone in need. If you are in need of a camp scholarship, please complete the forms on our website at: This Website Link

YEAR-ROUND PROGRAMS: Camp Harrison operates from September to June as a retreat center and is an ideal site for groups to meet and enjoy the atmosphere of our lakeside property. OTHER CAMP INFO: iSG Camps is a division of the International Sporting Group based in Columbus, Ohio. The management of iSG Camps has been operating youth sports camps for over 19 years with a high rate of customer satisfaction. Camps are well organized and designed so that the designated professional athlete can easily come in and interact with youth participants.

We recognize the benefits of sports participation for youth. We work with athletes of all levels. Our priority is to get children involved in physical activity and to help alleviate the ‘couch potato’ mentality that many young people are faced with. For more athletic students, our goal is to help elevate them to the next level. Being involved in our program gives children a sense of belonging, achievement and success that they can then take with them and use in their everyday lives.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: OUR PHILOSOPHY
Camp SAY was established with one goal in mind – to provide children who stutter with a highly immersive and accepting summer camp experience that builds self-confidence and helps children develop the vital communication skills they need to fully express themselves without fear, bullying or ridicule.

Complementing our wide range of exciting traditional camp activities, Camp SAY provides each child with unique experiences that challenge them in a safe way, creating a strong sense of achievement and helping them confidently navigate the unique issues that children who stutter face in the everyday world.

STAFF
The staff is dedicated to creating a safe and accepting environment where every child can find their beautiful and unique voice. Approximately 80% of children return to camp. Parents and campers tell us it’s our staff and unique approach that consistently exceed expectations, making Camp SAY such a rewarding and transformative experience.

We provide an excellent Staff-to-Camper Ratio: With Camp’s leadership team, camp counselors, specialized activities staff and more, our staff-to-camper ratio is 1 staff member for every 2-3 campers. In addition, each bunk is staffed at night with at least 2 counselors for an average of 6-10 campers.

Counselors complete a comprehensive training program to support the social, emotional and physical needs of all our campers. Staff development includes leadership training and extensive information about stuttering, camper health and safety, camp philosophy, policies and procedures and much more. Additionally, Specialized Activities Staff is carefully selected based on their skills and expertise. For example, a talented lifeguard with American Red Cross certification leads swimming activities and experienced horseback riding instructors have completed Certified Horsemanship Association training.

Our programs include chess programs and camps thru USA Chess, Our Gamebuilder Video Game Creation Programs and our Active Learning Computer Enrichment Programs.

Our staff is, comprised of the best children's chess instructors in North America! The USA Chess camps are uniquely qualified to cater to the needs of the advanced scholastic player as well as the true beginner. USA Chess hit its first milestone in the summer of 2000 producing the largest chess camp ever held in the United States, with more than 250 students enrolled. What was most surprising, however, was the amount of absolute beginners in attendance - more than 50% of the total enrollment was just starting to play chess. This realization led to the national rollout tour of 100 camps in more than 70 cities. The annual tours have been immensely successful with several thousand campers attending this year alone.

USA Chess thrives on providing a structured environment that is extremely conducive to learning chess. We handpick the best children's chess instructors from all over the United States and bring them to each camp. We believe our team is most effective in teaching chess to children of all ages and levels. The exceptional organization and ever-fun curriculum has fueled much interest from scholastic players and coaches from around the country, prompting them to request USA Chess camps in their areas.

At the same summer camp locations, we also offer the immensely popular Gamebuilder Video Game Creation Camps, The Active Learning Computer Animation Programs, and other Computer Enrichment Programs such as Modding, Networking and Hosting with Minecraft. We now offer seven unique programs in all.

At these camps, children are assigned a computer for the week; they spend the week learning to create their own one-of- a- kind video games in our Gamebuilder Camps, Animation Projects in our Animation Camps, also Modding, Networking and Hosting with Minecraft.
